The new text to speech feature in Stellaris is one of the best features that has been added to the game in a long time! It has improved the gameplay massively for me.

The amount of text in the various screens in Stellaris felt tedious and was a cause of fatigue and impatience, not to mention the ultimate feeling of annoyance by the sheer number of anomalies, and other text-rich dialogs that the player has to constantly relate to.

Of course, ideally you would have had someone record the text, for the best result, but I find that the text to speech software, at least on my Macbook pro, is super good and fits well into the game. The voice is controlled by your system settings, and can not be picked inside Stellaris, which was a bit confusing to me. But, since I don't really use my text to speech feature much for anything else, I am free to pick whatever I like in the System settings of MacOS.

If you have not yet turned on the text to speech feature, I just wanted to take a moment and encourage you to try it out. I think it has improved the gameplay massively, and allowed me to become more immersed into just playing the game. Not sure why, but often, having to read text inside a game is a distraction to me.

Where I would often try and memorize what the different dialogs were saying, I now find I am more involved in each game I play, often clicking the speech symbol just to hear the dialog text read to me. And although I do not have problems reading generally, something just makes it harder to maintain focus on reading text inside a game, so, I also seem find it easier to comprehend the text. Previously, when presented with text, I would more or less just skim it.

Oddly enough, you will find the option to enable text to speech in the Accessibility pane in the Settings – I think it could be easily argued that this is just as much a gameplay improvement, because having so much text with no speech is just going to make people tired (some of us anyway).

Tell us what you think:

  1. A dark day for Stellaris players may be approaching; Stellaris meets the infamous subscription model.
  2. Overlord makes the existing nightmare with popup- and notification spam worse, and it even manages to break another expansion.
  3. The Leviathans story pack is shooting itself in its foot, and the damage prevents it from being truly enjoyable.
  4. This review focuses on Stellaris, a grand-strategy game in space.
